10 Stunning Places to Visit in Skardu in Autumn for Fall Colors

Autumn turns Skardu into the most photogenic of Baltistan. For around four weeks, from mid-October to early November, the poplar, willow, apricot and walnut trees of the valley turn gold, amber and rust against the gray Karakoram mountain and deep blue sky.

In summer Skardu is a brown, high-altitude desert with green oases. Those same oases light up by October. Skardu’s village roads are lined with rows of golden poplar trees, apricot orchards blush orange and the Indus runs clean and slow beneath it all. The summer throngs have cleared out, the air is refreshing and the light remains mellow from morning until sundown.

We prepare autumn treks around Gilgit-Baltistan every season and our guides see the colors change from village to village. This guide reveals the Top 10 Skardu fall colors locations when they’re at their best and how to experience them without the crowds.

If you want to leave the planning to us. Our autumn tours are scheduled to coincide with the peak of Skardu fall foliage.

Best Time to Visit Skardu for Fall Colors

If we had to choose, we’d recommend the last week of October through the first two weeks of November. But here’s what makes autumn in Hunza truly fascinating. The colours don’t arrive all at once—they gradually travel downhill.

The higher settlements like Basho and Hushe change first often by mid-October. Shigar and Khaplu come in the second half of the month. Skardu city, Katpana and the Indus river banks normally get the last with the peak being in early November.

10 Must Visit Places in Skardu During Autumn

These are the places we return to every autumn while the leaves are turning. Some are well-known favorites while others are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Together, they make up our top picks for experiencing the breathtaking fall foliage of Skardu.

1. Shigar Valley

About 45 minutes to an hour from Skardu. Best time to visit in late October to early November

If you get only a day to spare, spend it at Shigar. The drive takes you through the Sarfaranga cold desert and then down into a broad green valley which in October is a sea of yellow. Poplars line the riverbank and every road.

Take a leisurely visit to Shigar Fort (Fong-Khar), the 17th century palace of the Amacha lords and now rebuilt as a heritage hotel. Its old orchards are beautiful in the fall. Nearby is the wooden Amburik Mosque, one of the oldest in Baltistan.

2. Khaplu Valley

About 2.5 to 3 hours from Skardu. Best time in the late October to early November.

The trip to Khaplu is half the reason to come. It runs along the Indus and then the Shyok River past hamlet after village, each a pocket of yellow and orange on barren slopes. Khaplu itself is a terraced ascent up the hillside with stone cottages nestled among poplars and apricot trees.

Explore Khaplu Palace, the former home of the Yabgo emperors that has been magnificently preserved and the Chaqchan Mosque, an antique wood-and-stone mosque with Kashmiri and Tibetan features. On a clear day you can see Masherbrum looming at the head of the Hushe Valley. We highly recommend staying here for a night. The terraces at night have a brightness that photographs don’t quite get.

3. Upper Kachura Lake

40 to 50 minutes from Skardu. Best time to visit: late October to early November.

Upper Kachura is known for its vivid turquoise water. In the autumn when the trees about the coast turn yellow and copper and the river is quiet and reflects every leaf, fewer people notice it.

There are lots of angles on the short walk down to the ocean and along the beach. But bring an extra layer. The lake is under shadow a lot of the morning and it can feel cooler than you expect.

4. Lower Kachura Lake and Shangrila

35 to 45 minutes from Skardu. The best time to visit is in late October to mid November.

Probably the most photographed place in Skardu. Shangrila is best visited in October. Red-roofed cottages and a pagoda-style restaurant are on a peaceful lake surrounded by willows and poplars turning bright gold.

5. Manthokha Waterfall and Kharmang

The best time to visit in late October to early November is 2 to 2.5 hours from Skardu.

This is the one we want more people to know about. The route to Kharmang goes down the Indus in tiny gorges and then a small settlement appears gleaming yellow in the midst of all that rock.

Last is the Manthokha Waterfall, a tall cascade flowing into a basin, encircled by willows and poplars. In autumn the water flowing clearer and the gold around it makes it one of the best underestimated sites for Skardu fall colors. Little tea booths exist beside the falls. Have a cup of Balti tea before you travel back.

6. Basho’s Valley

1.5 to 2 hours by jeep from Skardu. Best time to visit in mid to late October.

Basho is a separate planet from the rocky Skardu basin. Its slopes are dotted with juniper, pine and birch trees while willows and poplars line its flowing streams. It lies higher, so it often turns gold a week or two before the valley level making it a fantastic first stop on an October trip.

The road is somewhat bumpy in parts so you will need a 4 x 4 jeep. Instead you get calm fields, wooden hamlet buildings, flowing rivers and the impression of being properly far away.

7. Katpana Cold Desert

15 to 20 minutes away from Skardu. Best in early to mid November.

Skardu’s strangest contrast is shown near Katpana. Pale sand dunes come right up to the edge of green meadows and a little lake surrounded with willows. In November the trees turn to gold and all of a sudden you have sand, snowy peaks and autumn foliage in one perspective.

Go for sunset. The low light makes the dunes amber and the trees look as if they are glowing from inside.

8. Sadpara Village & Satpara Lake

About 20 to 30 min from Skardu. Best in late October to early November.

The road south to Satpara goes via Sadpara village and this small bit is one of our favorites to travel in autumn. The sloping fields and apricot orchards are blazing orange and catch the morning sun of course.

The lake itself is in a rocky bowl, blue and still with views above looking back over the valley. Deosai Plains after Satpara is actually a summer destination.

9. Fort Kharpocho

From Skardu city around 30 to 45 min. Best in early to mid November.

Want to view the full valley in one go? Ascend Kharpocho Fort. The historic fort stands on a rocky ridge above the town and from the top you look down on a patchwork of golden poplar lines, orchards and fields going down toward the Indus with dunes and mountains behind.

10: Shoq Valley: Skardu’s Hidden Autumn Escape

Shoq Valley, also spelled Soq, is a quiet side valley close to Upper Kachura and one of the least-visited places to see autumn foliage in Skardu. While Kachura’s lakeshore fills with visitors. Shoq stays almost empty: just glacial streams, stone and wood village houses.

In mid to late October, the trees along the stream and around the village fields turn yellow and copper and the snow on the surrounding ridges makes the color sharper.
